  • Q. Is it safe to go without food for 30 hours?

    A. Yes, it is safe to fast for 30 hours as long as you drink lots of water and clear juices to keep hydrated. We do not recommend going any longer than that. If you do find it difficult to fast, you can have a cup of plain, steamed, white rice.

NOTE: If you are pregnant, diabetic, breastfeeding, under 12 years of age, recovering from surgery or experiencing chronic illness or gastrointestinal disease, please do not do the 30 Hour Famine. If you are not sure if you should do the Famine, please talk to your family doctor.

    Q. Can I get some help in planning my event?

    A. Make sure you check out the Planning your event section for ideas in planning your event. You can also contact us at 1-888-8FAMINE, and we'll connect you to a Famine Rep in your area.

    Q. How do I submit my group's donation?

    A. Check out the Wrapping Up section on this site for more information.

    Q. What happens if I run out of donation sheets or deposit slips?

    A. Call us at 1-888-8FAMINE and we will send you more. Donation sheets are legal documents and are assigned specifically to your group's event. DO NOT PHOTOCOPY OR SHARE either donation sheets or deposit slips with other participants or groups.

    Q. What happens if some of my participants lose their unused donation sheets?

    A. When you are ready to return all other donation sheets (used and unused) to World Vision, include a note that some unused sheets were lost.
Tip: Before distributing donation sheets to participants, write down the sheet numbers for each of your participants on your Track-it-All sheet. This will allow you to easily identify which sheets are still missing.

    Q. What should I do with all of my extra unused donation sheets, deposit slips, posters, etc.?

    A. Return all unused donation sheets and deposit slips with the rest of the required forms in the postage-paid return envelope or Canada Post label provided in your Leader's Kit. Everything else you can keep.

    Q. What happens if I can't do the 30 Hour Famine on April 16th or 17th?

    A. While these are the national Famine dates, you can select a more convenient date. Just let us know what date you have chosen.

    Q. Can I use funds collected for any expenses incurred during my group's event?

    A. Unfortunately, no. All donations received should be part of your group's fundraising efforts and submitted to World Vision. Your donors can only receive tax receipts if we receive their donations.

    Q. Can I specify where my money will go?

    A. You can specify where you’d like your online donations to go. Check your online profile for more details.

    Q. Can we give the money to other charities, too?

    A. We require that all donations raised through the 30 Hour Famine be sent to World Vision Canada. As well, we can only issue tax receipts for donations given to the 30 Hour Famine.

    Q. How do I find my Group ID#?

    A. When you receive your 2010 Leader's Kit, you can find the Group ID# on the address label on the outer envelope and on your Track-it-all form.

    Q. Do I have to pay for postage when sending back the material to World Vision Canada?

    A. No. Your Leader's Kit includes either a postage-paid return envelope or Canada Post label that you can put on any envelope or box.

    Q. Do I need my parents' permission to do the 30 Hour Famine?

    A. We request that you let your parents know that you are planning to fast. If your Group Leader has not given you a form, print out the Disclaimer & Release Form (see the Forms tab) and give this to a parent or legal guardian to sign. Return the signed form to your Group Leader with the rest of your forms and donations.

    Q. What happens if I lose my unused donation sheets?

    A. Donation sheets are legal documents, and World Vision strives to maintain the highest level of accountability for donors' contributions. If you do lose your unused donation sheet, let your Group Leader know right away.

    Q. I am physically unable to fast. Can I still do the Famine?

    A. Yes, you can! Remember to tell your sponsors that you are physically unable to fast (due to medical conditions or age). You may want to alternatively give something else up for the 30 Hours (eg. technology).

    Q. Can I earn community service hours?

    A. Yes. Qualified Group Leaders can earn 40 hours and participants can earn 10 hours or more. Check with your school administration that they will recognize the 30 Hour Famine for community service hours.

    Q. I don't want to lead a group but want to be part of one. How do I join a 30 Hour Famine group?

    A. First, check if your school or church is holding a 30 Hour Famine event, then ask to join. You can also call 1-888-8FAMINE to find out if there is a local group in your area that you can join. Or you can decide to do the Famine on your own.

    Q. How do I get donations?

    A. You can create an online profile and send the link to anyone who wishes to donate. Then they can donate right there, online. For more fundraising ideas, check out the Fundraising section of this site.

    Q. Do the funds I raise this year through the 30 Hour Famine go towards helping Haiti?

    A. The 30 Hour Famine has committed to funding community projects around the world that help children in need in areas of health, nutrition and exploitation. However, due to the recent earthquake that has struck Haiti, the money you raise will also go towards supporting the relief efforts that are needed in Haiti.

    Q. Will the money that I raised last year for the 30 Hour Famine be used to help Haiti?

    A. The money that was raised for the 30 Hour Famine last year has already been put to use in the field to fund different projects helping children in need.

    Q. How much of the money raised for the 30 Hour Famine will be going towards helping Haiti?

    A. At this time it is difficult for us to determine, as the need in Haiti continues to be assessed due to the ever-growing need. The more money that people donate towards the Famine, the more is available to assist the relief efforts in Haiti.

    Q. Can I direct all the money I raise through the 30 Hour Famine to Haiti relief efforts?

    A. We cannot guarantee that all the money you raise through the 30 Hour Famine will go to helping Haiti relief efforts. Prior to the earthquake in Haiti, the 30 Hour Famine had committed its funds to other needy community projects around the world. However, the more money that people donate towards the 30 Hour Famine, the more is available to assist the relief efforts in Haiti.

    Q. My Famine event is planned in the next couple of months (Feb-April), will my donations still be applied to the Haiti relief effort?

    A. Your group fundraising money will help to support children & families in need all over the world as well as in Haiti.

    Q. What projects will the 30 Hour Famine support in Haiti?

    A. Along with ongoing emergency relief efforts, in the immediate future, safe places for children to play will be established. These child friendly spaces will be integrated into settlement camps in and around Port-au-Prince. During rebuilding, temporary educational physical facilities will be established to provide structured learning opportunities for children. World Vision will also focus on the re-establishment of primary health care in Haiti by providing mobile clinics, disease outbreak control, and the distribution of essential drugs and medical supplies.
